Tara Devi is a famous Nepali singer. She was popularly referred to as the ‘Nightingale of Nepal’. She recorded more than 4000 songs during her musical career. Her patriotic songs were quite popular and she also excelled in rendering love songs.
Personal Life of Tara Devi
Born in the year 1945 in Indra Chok,Kathmandu, she started singing at an early age. The song Sanguri Wari nihour tyo dhara pani is one of her best renditions. Her whole life was filled with tragic events. She lost her husband, Shiv Bahadhur in an accident. He was a pilot. Her eldest son also died at a young age.
Musical Career
Tara Devi’s songs were patriotic in nature. Her songs were considered to be revolutionary at that time. She considered music to be sacred and treated her music as a form of meditation. Her musical debut happened when she was eight years old. She started her musical career with the notable Nepali Musician Ustad Bhairab Bahadur. Her musical career was well appreciated and she was honored with many national awards.

Departure of a Great Soul
Tara Devi suffered from Parkinson’s disease, which caused great difficulty for her to speak and move normally. It eventually made her stop her singing career. She remained ill for a span of ten years and in her final years the disease progressed rapidly leading to her death. She was 60 years of age when she died.
Tara Devi is remembered well for her soulful singing and her songs, which had a vivid patriotic flavor. She regarded music as a meditation rather than a profession and her revolutionary performances still intensely remain in the minds of music lovers.
